ABC Plastic is similar to Champion or Elite Z, but the Putters are more like DX or Pro-D plastic. Test Flights Soon!!!

2 questions. 1) What type of plastic(s?) are the ABC discs comparable to. and 2) How do they perform?

So, for those who`ve never tried a 1st run disc, when they finally do it is likely to be a surprise how sweet it flies. For those who have thrown them it is hard to find anything to compare it to. That`s why they are so sought after. Not to say that the other runs aren`t great - I throw them myself - just that the 1st runs are usually the best. Sort of like comparing a tasty New York Strip to a Filet Mignon - one is delicious, but the other is heavenlygrin

Over time, as they run 1,000s of discs through the mold, the mold begins to slowly wear out - basically, the molecules are being stripped away, so each subsequent run actually gets ever so slightly fatter. This makes the disc slower with slightly different flight characteristics.

1st run discs, especially highly regarded models, get reall expensive over time because many times they are the best high-production run of the disc. This is when the new mold is closest to its "virgin" state.

Great question Cody! If you notice, almost all 1st runs are more expensive as time goes by, and the reason is technical in nature.

joe, why are the 1st run star destroyers going for so much? are they better than the regular run star destroyers? thanks, bro!
Sep. 8, 2010, 9:44am

JustinJ - it is impossible to make the Boss or Destroyer any lighter than about 165 grams due to the size of the wing - the wing is so big that it doesn`t leave enough plastic left over to make it across the top-plate of the disc. So the top-plate ends up lumpy or concave or maybe even holes in it. The only plastics that will come out of the mold clean are DX and R-Pro.

Thanks for the info! I´d like to find some CFR or star plastic if possible

@JustinJ I´ve been really impressed with the new R-Pro Boss 133g it floats in water which doesnt matter really to me but to see an overstable driver out on the market that floats opens up the D game to ppl who only throw floaters, the plastic is way more durable then you might think and flies a mile with ease, as far as lite Destroyers we have some 150g DX Destroyers that just bomb also and is made of the standard DX plastic....

150 gram discs are designed to do exactly what their heavier weight cousins of the same name do, for someone who has less snap and less armspeed than an experienced player in their prime.

In other words, if you meet a pro on the course who throws a 175 gram Wraith 400 feet in a relatively straight line with a little hyzer at the end but you know you have neither the experience or torque to do the same, you could safely assume that you might be able to throw a 145 gram Wraith in roughly the same manner and perhaps get 75% of the distance of the pro (300Ft.) depending on how much torque you actually do have.

Another way to look at it is if you are underpowering your shots - not getting enough speed and torque on them to keep them from hyzering out prematurely - then it will probably benefit you to lower the weights you`re throwing substantially.
The fact is, with less weight in your hand to propel forward, the faster your arm will complete its stroke and the faster the disc will be traveling when it leaves your hand.

The disadvantage to lighter discs is that they can be a bit squirrelly and unpredictable when the wind starts to kick up.
They are certainly more likely to fail when overthrown. But don`t let this stop you from trying them. For many players, these are the key to being able to do what the big boys do.
